Around Tk 40 lakh gold seized from a passenger at Shah Amanat International Airport

Around Tk 40 lakh worth of gold was seized from a passenger named Nezam Uddin from the Middle East at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport. He landed on Air Arabia flight G9-526 from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates at 6:40 am on Sunday.

Chittagong Customs officials with the help of National Intelligence Agency (NSI) seized the gold from Nezam Uddin. He is a resident of Boalkhali Upazila of Chittagong. He brought the gold unannounced.

Chittagong Customs Assistant Commissioner Mohiuddin Patwari said that the passenger’s behavior seems suspicious. Later he was challenged and searched. At that time, 235 grams of gold powder, 100 grams of gold ornaments and a gold bar weighing 116.5 grams were found from him. A total of 451 grams of gold was seized from him. The market price of this gold is Tk 39 lakh 85 thousand 240 as customs.

Mohiuddin Patwari said that the detained passenger claimed that he had brought the gold ornaments and the gold bar through customs. But its authenticity was not found. Powdered gold is also brought in without declaration. He hides them in the luggage by wrapping tape on paper to avoid the prying eyes of the administration.
