Dhaka’s greening will reach international standards by planting trees along the canal, says Mayor Taposh

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) commented that the greening of Dhaka will be raised to international standards through the extensive tree planting activities undertaken on both banks of Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Kalunagar canals (total length of 39.6 km on both banks). DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh made this comment during an exchange with the media after laying the foundation stone of ‘Manda Canal Restoration and Creation of Aesthetic Environment’ work on Wednesday morning (May 8) adjacent to Shapla Bridge in Mugda area.

DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Taposh said, “We know that we have not met the standards of greening or afforestation required by Dhaka city according to international standards. We will plant about 35,000 trees along the banks of this Manda Canal under our project. Through this, a A beautiful and aesthetic environment will be created. Along with that, the greening and afforestation activities for our city will be accelerated. I can rise to that international standard.”

Expressing hope for visible changes in the canals by June next year, DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Taposh said, “Among the canals being implemented, Manda canal is the largest (8.7 km). Next is Shyampur (4.78 km). .), Jirani (3.9 km) and Kalunagar (2.4 km) canal. In view of that, the work of restoration and aesthetic environment of Manda canal will be started by December The people of Dhaka will notice a radical change in June next year. That’s how all our consultants, contractors and officials are working. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring visible and aesthetic changes (of the canals) within the next year.”

It is to be noted that the Dhaka South City Corporation has started the implementation of the project of restoration and creation of aesthetic environment for Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Kalungar canals at a cost of Tk 898 crores and 73 lakhs. Out of this, 397 crores will be spent on restoration of 8.7 km long Manda canal and creation of aesthetic environment. Manda canal restoration and creation of aesthetic environment includes land development, removal of canal waste and silt, construction of bike lanes and approach roads, construction of 3 amphitheatres, construction of exercise shed-fountain-walkway-ghat, construction of 32 pedestrian crossing bridges and 6 vehicular bridges. , construction of sitting benches, construction of children’s play area-food court and coffee shop, R. C. C. Construction of retaining walls and slope protection, scenic protection fences and construction of public toilets etc. are included.

Later, Mayor DSCC inaugurated the Postgola National Crematorium development work.
