Two laborers died due to lightning during rain in Sarankhola upazila of Bagerhat. Six others were injured. The incident took place in the Bandhakata area of the Southkhali Union of the upazila, adjacent to the old Launch Ghat, at around 10:30 am on Saturday.
The two deceased are Mustafa (55) and Milan (35). They are two trawler workers. Six injured people are undergoing treatment at Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex. Initially, their names were not known.
Sharankhola Upazila Parishad Chairman Raihan Uddin said that the two who died in the lightning strike were brick trawler workers. The house of two in nearby Morelganj upazila Balibapara area.
There were some people with them. They were also injured.
Tarikul Islam, a local resident, said that a trawler reached Bandhakata with bricks from a brick kiln in Morelganj upazila around 9 am today. As the rain started, the workers of the trawler took shelter in a nearby house without starting to unload the bricks. At that time, eight people were injured by lightning. When they were rescued and taken to the hospital, the doctor on duty declared both of them dead. Six others are being treated at the same hospital.
Priya Gopal Biswas, Health and Family Planning Officer of Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex, said that a total of eight people affected by lightning were brought to the hospital by local people. They found two of them dead. They may have died on the spot due to lightning. Six injured people have been admitted to the hospital with first aid. But they are safe.
