Districts affected by Rimal may be inundated by 12 feet tide

Cyclone Rimal strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm. It is gradually approaching the coast of Bangladesh. According to the Meteorological Department, under the influence of Rimal, the low-lying areas of the remote islands and chars of some coastal districts may be inundated with high tides of more than 8-12 feet.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has informed this information in a special circular (serial number-11) on Sunday (May 26) morning.

According to the notification, the coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and their surrounding areas are affected by the advance of Cyclone Rimal and the pressure difference. Low-lying areas of islands and shoals may be inundated by wind-driven tides 8-12 feet higher than normal tides.

 Apart from this, under the influence of strong cyclone, heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty winds may occur in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

The cyclone is located at a distance of 265 km from Payra seaport. It may advance further and cross Sagar Dwip in India’s West Bengal and Khepupara coast of Bangladesh by Mongla this evening or midnight.

In such a situation, the Directorate of Meteorology has maintained distress signal number 10 in Mongla and Payra seaports and distress signal number 9 in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar seaports.

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum sustained wind speed is 90 kmph within 64 km of the center of the severe cyclone, increasing to 120 kmph in the form of gusts or gusts. The sea is rough in the vicinity of the strong cyclone center.

In this situation Payra and Mongla seaports have been asked to show distress signal number 10. The coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalkathi, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali and their nearby islands and chars will be covered under the 10th danger signal.

In addition, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong seaports have been asked to show distress signal number 9. The coastal districts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur and their remote islands and chars will be covered under the 9 major distress signal.
