Cyclone Rimal has caused extensive damage to houses, plants and crops in Subarnachar and Dwip Upazila Hatia of Noakhali. Out of this, about 52 thousand families have been affected in Hatia upazila alone, according to upazila administration. At the same time, Hatiya Member of Parliament Mohammad Ali said in a letter sent to the Ministry of Relief that about 4,000 raw houses have been destroyed. In that letter, it is mentioned that more than 50,000 people are trapped in water in the flooded areas. However, no loss of life has been reported anywhere in the storm till Monday afternoon.

Officer-in-Charge (Observer) of the District Meteorological Monitoring Center Rafiqul Islam told the media that due to the impact of Cyclone Rimal, stormy winds are blowing intermittently across Noakhali district from early morning. Wind speed was not precisely determined due to lack of local wind speed measurement system. However, it is estimated that the wind is blowing at a speed of 60-70 km per hour. Apart from this, 74 mm of rain has been recorded in district town Maijdi till 12 noon today.

Hatia Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shubashish Chakma told Prothom Alo that 52,000 families have been affected by Cyclone Rimal in Hatia. The most affected area is Nijhum Island. Most of the mud houses there have been damaged. The entire Nijhum island was submerged in 4-5 feet of water during the tide. Apart from this, Sukhchar, Nalchira, Charking, Tamaruddi and Char Ishwar unions were also affected by the storm. According to UNO, no specific damage information is available from any area due to continuous rains and thunderstorms after the storm.

Hatiya member of parliament Mohammad Ali in a letter sent to the state minister for relief this morning mentioned that about 9 thousand families of Nijhum Island in his parliamentary constituency have been affected by Cyclone Rimal. About 3500 raw houses were damaged there. About 60 percent of the 100 km unpaved road has been damaged. All the fish farms and fish ponds have been washed away, the crops of the land have been destroyed. 4000 families of Dhal Char have been affected by tidal water. Many mud houses were destroyed. Besides, about 20 thousand families living in Char Ghasia have been affected. As there is no embankment in Chanandi Union, tidal water has entered and nearly 20 thousand people of 4 thousand families have become waterlogged. Apart from this, 500 mud houses have been destroyed, said Member of Parliament Mohammad Ali. He also said that after the cyclone crossed the coast, the storm has been blowing with great speed since this morning. Along with that, the heavy rain continues. It is feared that the amount of damage may increase further.

Meanwhile, Subarnachar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Amin Sarkar told Prothom Alo that due to the impact of Cyclone Rimal, trees were uprooted in various places of Subarnachar due to the gusty winds, and road traffic was obstructed. He is sending the fire service people to cut the trees and normalize the traffic. Apart from this, the storm may damage houses in various places. However, as the rain continues with the storm and the electricity supply has been cut off since last night, they are unable to communicate with each other. That is why no detailed information about the damage is available.

Noakhali Deputy Commissioner Dewan Mahbubur Rahman told Prothom Alo at 2 pm today that it will take some time to get the complete damage information. However, in the initial information, 3 thousand 328 houses were partially destroyed and 28 houses were completely destroyed. Stating that the amount of damage will increase, the Deputy Commissioner said that they have not received any information about loss of life so far.
