Cyclone Remal has destroyed 150,000 houses along the coast. Out of this, more than 35 thousand houses were completely destroyed and more than 1 lakh 15 thousand houses were partially destroyed.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibbur Rahman gave this information at the post-cyclone press conference at the Secretariat on Monday.

The Minister of State for Disaster said that according to the information received so far, a total of 19 districts have been affected by Cyclone Remal. The districts are Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalkathi, Barisal, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Narail, Gopalganj, Shariatpur and Jessore.

Besides, the number of affected upazilas is 107 and the number of unions and municipalities is 914. The state minister said that the number of people affected by the cyclone is 37 lakh 58 thousand 96 people.

He said that 35 thousand 483 houses in the coastal area were completely destroyed in this cyclone, and 1 lakh 14 thousand 992 houses were partially destroyed. A total of more than one and a half lakh houses were partially or completely destroyed.

The state minister said that Cyclone Remal has hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh since yesterday evening. The influence of which continues in vast areas of the country even today. Due to the remal, the water entered the coastal areas and disrupted the normal life of the people. Houses were damaged in several areas. Due to continued rains across the country, waterlogging has occurred in many places. We conducted pre-disaster activities in coordination with all government departments. Now continuing the post-disaster activities.

Mohibbur Rahman said that the Meteorological Department has closely monitored and forecasted and cooperated with various data for taking decisions on anticipatory action and response. We are also in regular contact with regional specialized weather stations. In addition to this, various reliable international forecasting models are regularly tested and timely actions have been taken.

He said that the NDRCC of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief is open 24 hours for the purpose of continuous information exchange to deal with this cyclone. Since this morning we have been gathering data on the damage caused by the cyclone. I personally spoke to the MPs of the coastal districts on the phone and inquired about the local people. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is constantly monitoring the overall situation.
