Due to heavy rain, the road communication between Chimbuk Pahar, Ruma and Thanchi upazilas with Bandarban district headquarter has been closed. Since Tuesday morning, large vehicles including passenger buses have not left the Bandarban-Thanchi-Ruma road from the district headquarters. Due to rain, a bailey bridge in Laimipara area of that road has become dangerous for traffic on that road. However, small vehicles including motorcycles, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, auto-rickshaws are plying at risk, according to people related to transport.
Executive Engineer of Roads and Public Roads (Soaz) Department. Mosleh Uddin said that the Bailey bridge built in the 1980s in Laimipara area, 6 kilometers away from the district town, gave way last night due to heavy rain. Repair work will be started.
Transport owners and workers said that passenger buses and other large vehicles were stopped after learning about the bridge collapse this morning. Nurul Alam, general secretary of the Transport Owners Association, said that there are less passengers traveling to Ruma and Thanchimuk during the rainy season. Driving on mountain roads in rain is also dangerous. Considering all aspects, the passenger bus movement has been stopped for the time being.
If the repair of the bridge takes more time, buses may be run from both sides of the bridge.
Sawaz Executive Engineer Mosleh Uddin said it may take five-six days to complete the repair work of the old Bailey Bridge in Dewe. At that time, there is no option but to move the vehicles on this side of the bridge to this side and the vehicles on that side to this side.
