Delhi, the capital of India, has been burning in a terrible heatwave for several days. Last Friday (May 31) too, the temperature rose to 45.8 degrees Celsius, which is at least six degrees above normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also reported that Delhi received only two days of rain in May, the lowest in the last 10 years.

The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ in Delhi for Saturday due to severe weather. The agency has predicted thunderstorms and dust storms with gusts of 30 to 40 km in the city on this day.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature in the Indian capital on Saturday is likely to be 44 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is likely to be 20 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department has four color-coded alerts – green (no action required), yellow (watch and stay updated), orange (be prepared) and red (take action).

Friday’s temperature was the second highest recorded by Delhi’s primary weather station, the Safdarjung Observatory, this summer so far.

The city set a new temperature record last month. According to the IMD, the temperature rose to 46.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the highest in 79 years.

On that day, a temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius was recorded in Mungeshpur area of Delhi. However, only the Meteorological Department is skeptical about their own readings. The IMD said in a statement that it is checking sensors and data from weather stations in the area to look for possible errors.

However, the Indian Meteorological Department has not yet issued any report on the sensor test at Mungeshpur.

This summer’s unprecedented heat has also led to water shortages in the Indian capital. In the last 10 years, the month of May has seen the least number of rainy days this year. Earlier there were 11 rainy days in May 2023, seven in 2022, 12 in 2021 and seven in 2020. But in May this year, Delhi saw only two or three rains.
