River water is decreasing in Sylhet, residents are returning home from shelters

In Sylhet, the flood situation is improving due to landslides and heavy rains. Residents who took shelter in shelters due to flood water at upazila level and Sylhet city have started returning home.

Deepak Ranjan Das, Executive Engineer of Sylhet Water Development Board, said that the amount of rain in Meghalaya and Cherrapunji in India is less. As the amount of rain is decreasing in Sylhet, the water in the rivers is also decreasing. But the water is going down a bit slowly. This has improved the situation compared to before. If this situation continues, the water will decrease further.

Meanwhile, according to the sources of Sylhet City Corporation, 28 people out of 42 wards of Sylhet were under waterlogging. Among them, there was partial flooding in 13 wards on Wednesday. About 3000 residents took shelter in 20 shelters in Sylhet city. Many people left the shelter last night and this Thursday morning. However, it is not known how many people are in the shelter at 11 o’clock today.

Public Relations Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Sajlu Laskar told Prothom Alo that the accumulated water is coming down in different neighborhoods of Sylhet. Residents have started returning home. However, the city corporation shelters are open. Dry food along with cooked food is being provided by the city corporation. In order for the water to go down quickly, a campaign to clean the canals is going on.

According to Sylhet Water Development Board sources, the water level of various rivers in Sylhet has decreased at nine in the morning compared to six in the evening yesterday. The water of two rivers of Sylhet is currently flowing over the border. Among them, the water level at Kanighat point of Surma river in Sylhet was above the danger level even though it decreased compared to yesterday. At that point of the river, the water level is 12.75 cm. At 9 am today, water was flowing over 13 meters at that point.

Sylhet point of the river was flowing with 10.69 cm yesterday evening. As of 9 am today, it is falling by 10.54 cm.

Water at Amalshid Point of Kushiara River was flowing 15.48 cm above the water mark yesterday. According to the estimate of 9 am today, it was flowing with 15.27 centimeters below the boundary. At that point of the river, the water depth is 15.40 cm.

Apart from this, the water level at Fenchuganj point of the river is 9.45 cm. At 9 am today, water was flowing over 9.97 cm at that point. Apart from this, the water of other rivers of Sylhet, Lova, Sari and Dhalai rivers is also decreasing.

Meanwhile, Sylhet Meteorological Department assistant meteorologist Md Shah. Sajib Hossain said that the amount of rain has decreased in Sylhet from 6 am yesterday to 6 am today. Only 14 mm of rain fell during this period. However, there is a forecast of rain after six o’clock this morning till night.
