Sylhet received 65 mm of rain in three hours on Monday morning. Due to this, there is a fear of deterioration of the flood situation in the district again.

In Sylhet, people who left their homes for various destinations suffered due to this morning’s rain. Due to continuous rain for two days and the water of Surma and Kushiara rivers flowing over the flood line at two points, residents of different upazilas including the city are in danger of flooding.

Sylhet Meteorological Department Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib Hossain told the media that 65 mm of rain fell in three hours from 6 am to 9 am today. And 39.6 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours from 6:00 AM to 6:00 AM yesterday. Heavy rain is forecast in Sylhet till next Wednesday.

Although it rained from this morning, there was no waterlogging in any area of ​​the city. But the residents of the city are worried about the rising water of the Surma river. Arif Ahmad, a resident of Ramer Dighirpar area of ​​the city, said that on the 20th of last month, he had to leave his house and take shelter in his relative’s house as the water rose in his house. He is worried about whether such a situation will happen again.

Public Relations Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Sajlu Laskar said that the shelters are ready in the city area. People can climb there if waterlogging occurs. But today no one went to the shelter.

Water Development Board (Paubo) Sylhet informed that the water of Kushiara river has been flowing over the limit for a month, but the water of Surma river has exceeded the limit after five days. Since this morning, the water of Surma river is flowing over the boundary line at Kanighat point. Apart from this, the water of Kushiara river has been above the danger limit at Fenchuganj point for a month. Apart from this, the water of Sylhet’s Luva, Sari, Dawki River and Dhalai River is rising.

According to Sylhet district administration sources, 10 thousand 903 people have taken shelter in the shelters of 10 upazilas out of 13 upazilas in the district till yesterday. 653 shelters have been prepared in the district. Out of this, 219 people have gone to shelters. However, there are no people in the shelters of Sylhet City Corporation and Sadar Upazila.

Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Russell Hasan said that the district administration is cautious about the flood situation. Relief assistance continues in shelters and flood-affected areas.
