300 mm rain in Sunamganj, floods again in 5 upazilas

In Sunamganj, floods occurred again in five upazilas due to Monday’s rain. In the last 24 hours, the district has received 300 mm of rain. At the same time, the hill slope of Uzan came down. Due to this, many roads have been flooded in Sunamganj Sadar, Biswambharpur, Tahirpur, Chatak and Doarabazar upazilas. Flood water has entered the Surma riverside areas of the city.

Basically, if there is more rain in the upstream, the hill slope descends in Sunamganj and the situation worsens. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, India received 313 mm of rain in 24 hours till yesterday morning. At the same time, 170 mm of rain fell in Sunamganj. In the next 24 hours it rained 300 mm. The flood situation has worsened again due to the torrential rains.

Water has entered the roads, houses and businesses along Surma river in Sunamganj town. Launchghat, Jalilpur, Mallikpur, North Arpinnagar, Tegharia, Nabinagar, Wejkhali, Mallikpur and Barapara areas of the city are now in waterlogged condition.

The mayor of the municipality, Nader Bakht, said that water has entered the city’s rivers and riverside areas. There is water in roads, shops and houses in these areas. Shelters have been prepared.

Three areas of the Tahirpur-Sunamganj road have been flooded by the flood water, so the direct traffic on the road has been stopped. Islampur, Kalaruka, Norai and Chramhalla Unions bordering Chatak Upazila have been flooded. In Doarabazar upazila, various areas have been flooded due to rain and landslides. Due to the continuous rains and downpours, water is rising in all the rivers including Jadukata, Patnai, Rakti, Boulai, Kushiara, Naljur, Chela, Chachi, Khasiamara in Sunamganj.

Ismail Hossain, a resident of Islampur village of Sadar Upazila, said that the road from the village to the city has been submerged in water. Now we have to come and go by boat.

Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board. Mamun Howladar said, heavy rain is forecast. But this morning the rain has reduced. Sunamganj and its upstream Cherrapunji in India are mainly responsible for the rise in water. Rain may worsen the situation.

Floods occurred in Sunamganj since June 16. At one stage the entire district was flooded. One thousand and 18 villages of the district were flooded. Eight lakh people became waterlogged. Many houses and roads were flooded. 25 thousand families took shelter in people’s homes, educational institutions and government-private institutions. After June 23, the water in the rivers began to recede. When the situation improves, people return to their homes. Some still could not return home. Meanwhile, the flood situation has started to deteriorate again.
