85 villages are flooded in Netrakona, the water of Ubdakhali river is above the flood limit

At least 85 villages in Kalmakanda, Barhatta, Mohanganj and Madan upazilas of Netrakona have been inundated due to continuous rain and landslides coming down from upstream. Among them, at least 68 villages of eight unions of Kalmakanda upazila have entered flood water since last Sunday evening. Village roads, ponds, houses and schools were flooded and common people suffered.

At 11 am today, Tuesday, the water in the Udakhali river in Kalmakanda rose and flowed 58 cm above the flood limit at Dakbungalow point. The latitude at that point is 6.55 meters.

The former chairman of Barakapan Union Parishad (UP) of the upazila. Hadichchuzzaman told Prothom Alo on the phone, “Barkhapan Union is a low-lying area. Among the 28 villages in the union, all the villages except Jayanagar, Durlabhpur and Baghasatra have received flood water. And if the water rises by one to half a foot, many people will have to leave their homes and take shelter in shelters. People are not able to buy daily necessities due to water in Barayund Bazar, Barakhapan and Jatrabari Bazar.

Chairman of Kailati UP Zainal Abedin said that 15 villages including Benua, Khala, Charalkona, Sanura, Sakua Indrapur of his union have been flooded again. Roads are submerged in low-lying areas. Mozammel Haque, Chairman of Pogla UP, said that people have become somewhat waterlogged due to inundation of low-lying areas in about 23 villages of his union. Several roads have been submerged in water. A few pond fish were washed away.

Obaidul Haque Bhuiyan, chairman of Kharnai UP, said that as his union is a border area, the water does not last long. However, since Monday morning, the roads have broken down in several areas including Rajnagar, Baluchra, Bausam, Chautanagar, Taranagar, Ghoragaon due to the pressure of mountain landslides.

Sarwar Jahan, executive engineer of Water Development Board (PUBO) Netrakona office, said that 104 millimeters of rain fell in Durgapur and Jharia Jhanjail railway station areas of Netrakona in the last 24 hours till 9 am today. During the same period, Cherrapunji in India recorded 380 mm of rain. Apart from this, there has been heavy rain in Sylhet and Sunamganj. The water in all the rivers of the district has started to rise. In the meantime, Ubdakhali river water is flowing 58 cm above the flood limit in Kalmakanda. However, the water of other big rivers like Kansa, Someswari, Dhanu are flowing under Vipatseema. However, there is no danger of major floods, he said.

Kalmakanda Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Asaduzzaman said that about 50 shelters have been opened in the upazila. Farzana Akhtar, UNO of Barhatta, said that about 9 villages of Raipur, Chiram and Sahta Union of her upazila were flooded. But it cannot be called a flood.

Deputy Commissioner Shahed Parvez said that the administration has all kinds of preparations to deal with the flood. Constant inquiry is being made through the concerned Upazila Nirbahi officers along with the chairmen of the Union Parishad. There is no situation to go to the shelter yet.
