Heavy rains and upstream flows may worsen the flood situation in different parts of the country. The water in the main flood-prone rivers of the country is increasing. The flood forecast and warning center of Bangladesh Water Development Board has already said that the water of five rivers has risen above the danger level and created a flood situation.

This information was informed in a warning signed by Sardar Uday Raihan, Central Executive Engineer of BWDB on Tuesday (July 2).

It said that the water level of the main rivers in the northeastern part of the country is increasing overall, which may continue for the next 24 hours. In the next 24 hours, the flood situation may worsen in some low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts in the northeastern region and the flood situation in Moulvibazar district may remain stable.

It also said that heavy rainfall is expected in the northern, northeastern, southeastern and adjacent upstream areas of the country in the next 24 hours. In the next 24 hours, the water level of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region will increase especially during the plains and may cross the flood limit at some points in the short term.

The water level in the Brahmaputra-Yamuna rivers is also rising, which may continue for the next 72 hours, the Water Development Board warned. Besides, the water level of Ganga-Padma river is increasing, which may continue for the next 24 hours.

In the next 48 hours, the water level of the Brahmaputra river may rise and cross the Vipatsima at some points. In the next 24 hours, the water of Muhri, Feni, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in the south-eastern region may increase and flow near the coast line especially during flat times.

Sardar Uday Raihan, executive engineer of Paubo, said that Surma's water is Kanighat and Sunamganj; Kushiara water in Amalshid, Sheola, Sherpur-Sylhet and Markuli; Manu river water in Moulvibazar; Water from Someshwari is flowing over Vipatseema at Kalmakanda and Nakugaon in Bhugai. As a result, the lower areas of five districts (Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Netrakona and Sherpur) have been flooded.
