Two Rohingyas died in a landslide due to heavy rain

Two Rohingyas died after separate hills collapsed in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia due to continuous heavy rains. Several others were injured at this time. Besides, dozens of camps have been flooded and hundreds of shelters have been damaged by water. Meanwhile, landslides fell on the road at several spots, disrupting traffic on Cox’s Bazar Marine Drive for several hours. Later, when the army removed the soil with bulldozers, traffic became normal around 11 pm, said Sameer Ranjan Saha, Cox’s Bazar range officer of Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division.

Ukhia police station OC Shamim said two people were killed in Camp-4 of Ukhia due to heavy rains. The deceased are the son of Dil Mohammad of Ukhia Camp-11. Anwar Hossain (21) and Leather of Teknaf. Alam’s son. Sifat (13).

Citing the Rohingyas, the OC also said that Anwar Hossain was pinned to the ground and died when the shelter on top of the hill in Balukhali of Rohingya Camp-11 collapsed on Wednesday morning due to continuous heavy rain. On the other hand Sifat came to visit his uncle’s shed and was crushed to death. His home is said to be Leda in Teknaf. On receiving the information, the police went to the spot and carried out rescue operations and recovered two bodies.

On the other hand, hundreds of shelters have been damaged by heavy rain water in various blocks of Rohingya Camp-1 East West-3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12 and 20 X in Ukhia. And the residents are suffering from flooding.

Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist of Meteorological Department Cox’s Bazar station, said that rain has continued in Cox’s Bazar district for the last one and a half weeks due to the effect of low pressure. Cox’s Bazar recorded 74 mm of rainfall from 6 am on Tuesday (July 2) to 6 am on Wednesday (July 3). Although the intensity of rain decreased during the day, heavy rain again occurred from midnight on Tuesday. Average rainfall from Saturday (29 June) to Wednesday (3 July) morning was 68 mm. Rainfall is less during the day but heavy rain continues intermittently at night from evening onwards. According to the weather forecast, rain may continue for a few more days. Besides, there is a possibility of mountain collapse, he said.

Earlier, on June 22 this year, 12 Rohingyas and locals died in a mountain landslide. The list has been extended since 2 people died in the landslide on Wednesday morning. Bangladesh Environment Andolan (Bapa) Cox’s Bazar district president HM Ershad said that if this trend continues, the death march may be longer.

Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, Muhammad Shaheen Imran, said that residents of vulnerable areas have been instructed to evacuate to avoid death by landslides due to continuous rains. There is a risk of flooding during heavy rains. The DC also mentioned that the UNOs have been instructed to prepare in advance to be safe from the damage if the rivers in the district recede.
