Floods in Assam, 48 people lost their lives

Floods caused by heavy rains in the Indian states of Assam and Manipur have taken a dire form. In the last 24 hours, 8 people have died due to floods. The number of affected people has exceeded 16 lakh. So far, a total of 48 deaths have been reported in the two states, including 46 in Assam. Khabar Times of India. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed two deaths in Sonitpur district. Besides, one death each was reported in Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darang, Golaghat, Biswanath and Tinsukia districts.

Although the flood situation has improved slightly in some parts of Assam, the water levels of the Brahmaputra and Barak and their tributaries remain above the flood limit.

Heavy rains continue in both Assam and Manipur and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for all northeastern states this week.

The Army, Assam Rifles, State Police, Manipur Fire Service, NDRF and SDRF personnel and local volunteers are rescuing the flood-affected people with boats as well as distributing water bottles and food packets.

2,800 villages under 105 revenue circles are still under water and nearly 40,000 hectares of cropland have been inundated by floodwaters. About 4 lakh people have taken shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centers set up by the administration in 24 flood-hit districts. The central government said full assistance would be sent to the flood-hit states by providing more manpower, boats and life-saving equipment to Assam and Manipur.
