Dharla, Teesta river, Dudhkumar and Brahmaputra rivers in Kurigram have risen due to the upstream flood and heavy rains, further worsening the overall flood situation. As the water of Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers flowed over the Vipatseema in the district, more than three hundred and two lakh people have become waterlogged.

Residents of Char are unable to go to work due to waterlogging. The food in their house has also come to an end. In such a situation, there is a shortage of food, clean water and fodder in the pastures. The flood victims are not getting enough relief against the demand. As soon as they see the boat, people from Banvasi are running in the hope of relief.

Today Saturday at 12 noon according to the information of the Water Development Board (PUBO), the water in all the rivers of Kurigram continues to rise. Among the major rivers of the district, the water of Dharla river is flowing 3 cm above the limit at Kurigram Sadar point, 71 cm of Brahmaputra river at Chilmari point, 65 cm at Nunkhawa point and 69 cm at Hatia point and 28 cm of Dudhkumar river is flowing above the limit at Pateshwari point. However, despite the rise in Teesta water, it is flowing 31 cm below the danger line.

Yesterday Friday and today Saturday, after visiting a few unions of Nageshwari, Ulipur and Sadar upazilas and talking to the local residents, it is known that the flood situation has worsened due to the upstream flow. Every day the water of the Brahmaputra and Dudhkumar rivers is rising and more and more houses and houses are being drowned. In the homes of Banvasi people, there is water like drinking water, sometimes like water. Some of them are living in local schools, Eidgah grounds, some in boats, banana tree rafts and house lofts.

Cooking is stopped due to lack of rice, dal and oil in many homes. Even though many people have rice and pulses in their houses, they are in trouble with cooking as the stove is submerged in water. In such a situation, hearing the sound of the engine of the boat, people are running in the hope of relief. Even though the official relief assistance program has started, 60 percent of the people have not received relief yet. On the one hand, there is a food crisis, on the other hand, due to water in the homesteads for a long time, the flood-affected people are suffering from various water-borne diseases. Along with people, there is a shortage of food.

Civil surgeon of Kurigram. Manzoor A Murshed said that a total of 83 medical teams including one in 73 unions and each upazila and civil surgeon’s office are working to treat flood-affected people in the district. A control room has been opened in the Civil Surgeon’s office to ensure quick service to the flood-affected people. Yesterday afternoon for the purpose of collecting information, when the people of Dakshin Kapnar Char of Nunkhawa Union of Nageshwari went to Char and this morning Sahiber Algar Char, Banvasi people of Char came to the river bank and surrounded the boat.

Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Kapna Char, said that a family of 11 people lives in Dhaka by making masons. After coming home on Eid, he got trapped in flood. Couldn’t go back after that. He said, ‘I did not imagine that the water in the bun will increase so much. The water is rising again after a little decrease. There is no action at hand. There is no food in the house. With my wife and children, I have not eaten at the same time. I have not received any relief yet.

Masud Rana, a resident of Airmari Char in Saheb’s Alga Union, said, “I live for seven days in a house full of water.” I am going to the school next door with my bag. The water is also rising. I sit on the post all day. Elya did not bring any relief to us. There is tea at the bottom of the river throughout the day for relief. As soon as the boat is seen, it approaches with a raft of bananas. Relief did not come back. What kind of relief will Bhai Hamar give?’

District Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif told the media that there is sufficient relief allocation in the district. Relief is being sent in coordination with upazila administration and local chairmen. Till yesterday, 291 metric tons of rice, 21 lakh 85 thousand taka and 15 thousand 320 packets of dry food have been distributed locally. Arrangements will be made to reach those areas where relief has not reached.
