Due to the students’ agitation for quota reform in government jobs, rail communication with Dhaka has been stopped across the country. Students of various universities outside Dhaka are not able to travel by train due to their stay on railway tracks.

Railway sources said that no train is leaving Dhaka since noon due to the protestors occupying the railway near Mohakhali. At this time, Dhaka-bound trains are stuck at various stations. As a result, thousands of passengers have suffered.

Agniveena Express, Mahanagar, Banalta, Akashto Express, Suvarna Express, Silk City, Chattla Express, Kalni and Yamuna Express trains were scheduled to leave Dhaka after noon. These intercity trains did not leave from Kamalapur station due to railway blockade. Among them Banlata and Subarna Express trains are kept near Dhaka. Banlata is supposed to come from Rajshahi and Subarna from Chittagong and again take passengers from Kamalapur.

Railway officials said that the railway track has been blocked near Mohakhali in Dhaka. Apart from this, they have received news of blocking railway tracks in Rajshahi, Khulna and Mymensingh. As a result, the train movement has come to a standstill all over the country. Trains run from Dhaka to Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna sections via Bangabandhu Bridge. On the other hand, trains run to Chittagong and Sylhet via Bhairabazar in the eastern region. Trains go to the greater Mymensingh region via Gazipur. Trains of some districts including Faridpur, Rajbari are running through Padma Bridge.

82 intercity trains run daily from Kamalapur station in Dhaka. Apart from this, 48 mail, local and commuter trains come and go from Dhaka. If the train movement is interrupted at any point between Kamalapur and Tongi in Gazipur, the rail communication with the whole country is stopped. Railway officials say that there are certain limits on train movement from Kamalapur to Tongi. All the trains are stuck in places due to blockade. Even if the blockade is lifted, it will not be possible to move the jammed trains at once. Due to this, train schedule may be disrupted till tomorrow.

Director General of Railways, Sardar Shahadat Ali Media, said that there were reports of railway blockades at various places. If the railway track is not clear, the train will not be able to run.
