The disaster management building in Mahakhali of the capital was attacked and extensively vandalized and set on fire around the ‘shutdown’ of the anti-quota activists. Half a dozen government vehicles there were burnt.

The rampage was carried out for about an hour from 4:30 pm on Thursday. Later the fire spread to other floors.

According to sources, around 4:30 pm, a group of youths came forward with sticks on Bir Uttam AK Khandkar road from Amtali intersection in Mohakhali. They came in front of the disaster management building in front of Titumi’s college and started pelting bricks. Several windows in the front of the building were broken. Later they vandalized the road in front of the building and some cars and motorcycles in front of the entrance of the building. At one stage some cars were set on fire.

At one point, the cars next to it caught fire. After half an hour of fire, the building also caught fire. The cars in front of the building started exploding little by little. Even after two hours of the fire, no fire service team could reach there.

Director of Disaster Management Directorate (Kabikha). Badrul Haque told the media that all the glass in our building has been broken. The building also caught fire. We came out from the roof of the building through the roof of the neighboring building.

About Shahjahan, the duty officer in the control room of the fire service headquarters, an operator told media , “We are getting many calls about the fire in the building. But our situation is bad. We cannot go because there are barricades on the road. We have informed the Kurmitola Fire Service – they are also unable to go, the agitators are obstructing.
