Mamata Banerjee is one of the most influential and long-serving politicians in the Indian state of West Bengal. He was born on January 5, 1955 in Kolkata. Mamata's political career started from her student days. He entered politics through the student union and later joined the Indian National Congress. In 1997, Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Congress and formed her own political party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The party emerged as a strong alternative to the Congress in West Bengal. In 2011, the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee ended 34 years of Left Front rule in West Bengal and Mamata became the state's first woman Chief Minister.

As Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee initiated various social and economic schemes, such as Kanyashree, Yuvashree and Sabuj Sathi.
