Bangladesh is interested in building two more nuclear power plants in Rooppur

Bangladesh has expressed interest in building another nuclear power plant of two units at Rooppur. By the end of the year, the first unit of Rooppur nuclear power plant may start producing electricity.

 

Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban on Tuesday and discussed nuclear power plants.

This was informed in a press release sent by the local public relations department of Rosatom today. It is said that the issues of Bangladesh-Russia strategic cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy were included in their discussion.

 

In his speech, Alexey Likhachev said that one of the most important milestones in the construction of Rooppur nuclear power project is going to be achieved. The first unit will start generating electricity before the end of this year. Currently we are discussing new projects. Bangladesh has expressed keen interest in building two more nuclear power units in the Rooppur nuclear power plant area.

 

Alexey Likhachev said the construction of high-capacity multipurpose research reactors is also being reviewed. Research reactors are capable of providing various solutions in the fields of science and nuclear medicine.

 

Director General of Rosatom came to Dhaka last Monday. He then visited the under-construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Project and the Green City residential area.

 

Two nuclear power units are being built in Rooppur of Ishwardi upazila with the financial and technical support of Russia. Each has a production capacity of 1,200 MW. State-of-the-art 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactors are being installed in each unit. The engineering wing of Rosatom is acting as the general designer and contractor of the project.
