A mild earthquake was felt in a large part of the country, including the capital Dhaka. No damage was immediately reported. This earthquake originated in Mawlaik area of Myanmar. Its magnitude was 5 on the Richter scale.
The Meteorological Department said that the earthquake occurred at 2:44:49 PM Bangladesh time today. Its center is 441 southeast of Dhaka in Mawlaik area of Myanmar.
This earthquake in Myanmar was felt in Rangamati and Khagrachari. Besides, the earthquake was also felt in Dhaka, Comilla and Cox’s Bazar.
Earlier last Wednesday, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred in the same area of Myanmar. That earthquake was also felt across large areas of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong.
Strong earthquakes have occurred in this place in Myanmar at different times before. Mehdi Ansari, a professor and seismologist of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, told media last Wednesday about the reason why such a distant earthquake was also felt in Bangladesh. That is why it is felt even at a distance of 400 to 500 km.
Today’s earthquake in Myanmar also originated at a depth of 110 km, according to India’s National Center for Seismology. According to their information, the earthquake occurred at 2:14:57 local time in Myanmar.
