In Sunamganj, the water level of rivers and streams continues to rise due to rains and uphill slopes. In Chatak Upazila of the district, the water of Surma and other rivers is flowing over the border. The lower areas of some unions of this upazila have been flooded. Sunamganj-Tahirpur road in Sakthiarkhala area of Biswambharpur upazila is inundated with water from the hill, people are suffering in terms of travel. There is no direct traffic here.
According to the information of the Water Development Board (PUBO), the water level of the river was 7.55 meters at Sholghar Point of Sunamganj Municipal Town at six o’clock today on Monday. Here the water level of Surma river is 7.80 meters. As such, the river water is still below the danger level. However, in 12 hours, the water here has increased by 7 cm. 53 mm of rain fell in Sunamganj on Sunday night.
The water level of Surma river in Chatak was 65 cm above the danger mark at 9 am today. It rose to 77 cm above the danger line at 6 pm. In the same upazila, Chela river water is flowing 82 cm above the boundary line and Pian river water is flowing 90 cm above the boundary line. The lower areas of Islampur, Norai and other unions bordering this upazila have been flooded. People are suffering as rural roads are flooded. Water is rising from upstream to downhill.
Harunur Rashid, a resident of Chatak upazila city, said that it has been raining and torrential rain since Sunday night. The water is rising. If the water continues to rise, there may be a flood situation in the upazila.
Chatak Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Mostafa Munna told Prothom Alo this evening that he visited Norai Union of the upazila. Rural roads have water. However, water has not yet entered people’s homes. Shelters have been prepared. People can go to these shelters in case of flood situation. Local public representatives have also been instructed in that way.
Meanwhile, several parts of the road have been inundated in the Shaktiarkhala area of Biswambharpur upazila on the Sunamganj-Tahirpur road. As that part is low, it gets flooded when the hill slope comes down. It stopped direct traffic with Tahirpur.
UNO Salma Parveen of Tahirpur said, “I heard that the road has been flooded in Shaktiarkhala area. If the upstream does not come down, the water will move from the road.
Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Town. Mamun Howladar said, Sunamganj received less rain on Monday. However, the water in the rivers of the district is rising again due to the descent of hill slopes from the upstream. However, there is no danger of major floods in Sunamganj.
