Political Parties Condemn Attack on Nurul Haque and Gono Odhikar Parishad Leaders
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal have expressed strong condemnation and protest over the attack on Nurul Haque, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad and former VP of DUCSU, along with other party leaders and activists.
BNP
In a statement on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that the party respects the right to peaceful political activities and does not support any actions that undermine democratic political culture. He condemned the attack on leaders and activists of Gono Odhikar Parishad, including Nurul Haque and Rashed Khan, and demanded proper medical care for the injured. Mirza Fakhrul also wished for Nurul Haque’s speedy recovery.
Jamaat-e-Islami
Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former member of parliament, expressed deep concern and strong condemnation over the injuries suffered by Nurul Haque and other leaders. In his statement, he described the incident as shocking, unwanted, and unacceptable, noting that such attacks are reminiscent of fascist tendencies even after the fall of authoritarianism. He called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and urged authorities to take legal action and exemplary punishment.
Chhatra Dal
In a press release issued Friday night, Chhatra Dal condemned the violent attack on leaders who are at the forefront of anti-fascist movements and pro-democracy activism. The party’s President Rakibul Islam and General Secretary Nasir Uddin demanded a prompt investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible, stating that such uncontrolled acts by law enforcement are unacceptable in a post-uprising democratic environment.
Incident Background
The clash took place Friday evening in Kakrail, Dhaka, when a procession of Gono Odhikar Parishad activists passed in front of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) office. The confrontation escalated, and law enforcement intervened with baton charges, injuring Nurul Haque and several others.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), despite repeated warnings, some activists attempted to disrupt public order through mob violence. They attacked law enforcement, organized a torch procession, threw stones, and attempted to set fires at multiple locations. To protect public safety, security forces were compelled to use force. Five army personnel were reportedly injured during the incident.
Medical Update
A high-level medical board has been formed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to oversee Nurul Haque’s treatment. Hospital director Brigadier General Md. Asaduzzaman reported on Saturday morning that Nurul Haque sustained head injuries and a fractured nasal bone, which caused heavy bleeding the previous night. While the bleeding has now stopped and he has regained consciousness, doctors cautioned that it is too early to declare him out of danger within the next 48 hours.
