The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) has stated it does not support any delay in the upcoming national elections, according to Akhtar Hossain, the party’s Member Secretary. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the National Consensus Commission at the Parliament premises on Saturday (April 19), he emphasized that while timely elections are essential, there must also be visible reforms and justice.
During the press briefing, Akhtar Hossain expressed concerns over the current constitution, stating it is inadequate to sustain a truly democratic environment. He added that discussions with the commission included the feasibility of a Constituent Assembly election and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power.
NCP’s chief organizer, Hasnat Abdullah, clarified misconceptions, saying, “Some believe we are calling for two separate elections, but that’s not true. We are proposing a single election which will simultaneously function as a legislative and constituent assembly election.” He stressed that consensus among all political parties is crucial to proceed.
He also highlighted that NCP proposed ensuring public safety and a smooth post-election transition of power. Furthermore, they recommended that, except for money bills, MPs should have the freedom to vote independently, even against their own party lines—aimed at strengthening legislative independence.
