The BNP has reiterated that it had already demanded in February that the Awami League be brought under judicial process for its alleged involvement in murder, enforced disappearances, and political repression. In a press statement issued on Sunday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that during their meeting with the Chief Advisor on February 10, they formally submitted a letter calling for the Awami League to be tried as a political party for crimes against humanity. He added that this demand was repeated during their latest meeting on April 16, where the BNP again called for swift trials of what they described as the "fallen fascist party" and those associated with it to clean up the political landscape. Fakhrul emphasized that they had long argued that the Awami League should be legally banned as a fascist party through proper judicial channels. The BNP welcomed the interim government's recent decision to suspend the activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, viewing it as a long-overdue step towards justice. He noted, however, that had the government acted earlier on BNP’s suggestions, it could have avoided embarrassment and pressure. The BNP also urged the announcement of a concrete roadmap for restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
