On Friday, June 13, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan that the recent meeting in London between BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has proven that the people of Bangladesh can unite in critical times. Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that this meeting marked a significant turning point, showcasing that true leadership can bring the nation together when it matters most.
He noted that the joint declaration released after the meeting reflected the cordial and constructive nature of the discussions. The main focus of their talks was the upcoming national election. Tarique Rahman proposed that the previously announced election date in April should be brought forward, arguing that it would not be an appropriate time. Mirza Fakhrul stated that the nation was encouraged to see the Chief Adviser agree to this proposal, with both sides tentatively settling on holding the election by mid-February.
Expressing gratitude towards Dr. Yunus, Mirza Fakhrul commended him for his wisdom and timely initiative in inviting Tarique Rahman to the meeting. He said this step helped resolve a growing uncertainty in the political landscape and offered the nation a renewed sense of direction. He further remarked that Tarique Rahman once again demonstrated his qualities as a statesman and thanked him on behalf of the party and its supporters, describing the meeting as one that had captured the attention and concern of the entire nation.
