NCP Leader Criticizes Refined Awami League Allegations and Calls for Political Accountability
Sarjis Alam, chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in northern Bangladesh, has strongly criticized the notion of a “refined Awami League” and questioned recent political maneuvers ahead of upcoming elections.
“We have heard claims that the Awami League’s so-called good leaders will receive nominations from the Jatiya Party in this election. The real issue, however, is that it’s a case of ‘thieves supporting thieves.’ The story of the ‘refined Awami League,’ as propagated by the Awami League’s ally and Jatiya Party co-chairman Mostafizur Rahman, is actually an idea promoted by India. This concept will not be implemented in post-uprising Bangladesh,” he said.
Alam made these remarks on Saturday evening after a meeting with laborers at the District Kuli Workers Union office near Sher-e-Bangla Park in Panchagarh.
He further emphasized that those responsible for major atrocities in Bangladesh’s recent history—such as the 2009 BDR killings, the Shapla Square incident targeting religious scholars, and the 1975 post-uprising mass killings of students and citizens—should never be allowed to participate in politics.
“The political and organizational activities of the Awami League have been prohibited before. Similarly, the Jatiya Party, which supports the Awami League and attempts to legitimize its unlawful elections, must also be permanently barred from political participation in Bangladesh through proper legal channels,” Alam said.
He also defended the role of opposition activists, saying, “How can they have the audacity to speak against a party like Gono Odhikar Parishad? Our leader Nur has been a comrade in anti-fascist movements. While we may critique or disagree with some of his actions, during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, he was brutally attacked by student and youth league goons, beaten and left bloodied in the streets. He represents a people-powered, grassroots political organization.”
Addressing the interim government, Alam warned, “Your leniency toward fascist allies undermines public trust. You are not merely performing routine governmental duties—you are entrusted with reforming the nation on the lives and sacrifices of countless citizens. Your responsibility is to identify the guilty, ensure justice, and bring perpetrators to trial, ultimately holding killers accountable under the law.”
