Leaders and activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad staged a road blockade at Chattogram’s CDA Avenue near the No. 2 Gate area on Friday night. The protest began around 10:30 p.m. and continued until approximately 12:30 a.m.
Md. Jasim Uddin, a senior member of the council, alleged that party chief Nurul Haque had come under attack by members of a joint force. He warned that until an apology is issued and the attackers are held accountable, their demonstrations will not stop.
Eyewitnesses reported that activists from both the youth and student wings of the organization also joined in, setting fire to tires and chanting slogans in the middle of the street. As a result, traffic movement between Muradpur and GEC intersection came to a halt.
The area falls under the jurisdiction of Panchlaish Police Station. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Solaiman confirmed around midnight that the group was staging their program but assured that the road would soon be cleared.
Earlier in the evening, a clash had broken out in Dhaka’s Kakrail area between activists of the Jatiya Party and the Gono Odhikar Parishad, leaving several people injured, according to police. The incident occurred in front of the Jatiya Party’s central office.
