At least 41 people have been killed in a fire in a building housing workers in Mangaf town in Kuwait’s southern Ahmadi governorate.

Al Jazeera reported this news in a report on Wednesday (June 12).

At least four people were killed in a fire in a labor building in Mangaf and at least 35 in another building nearby, the report said, citing a Kuwaiti official.

At least 43 people were injured, state news agency Kuna reported. The injured persons have been taken to various nearby hospitals for necessary treatment, the ministry said. Some of the injured are in critical condition.

On the other hand, the Indian press India TV News says that four Indian citizens are among those killed in the fire.

Dozens of people were injured in the fire in the southern Mangaf district early Wednesday morning, the country’s health ministry said. The area is populated by foreign workers, but there was no immediate information on the nationalities of the casualties.

Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yusuf Al-Sabah ordered the arrest of the building’s owner during a site visit.

Sheikh Fahad, who is in charge of the Ministry of Interior and Defense, said that unfortunately the greed of real estate owners leads to these issues.

Authorities said the fire has been brought under control and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A senior police officer told state television that the building that caught fire was used to house workers and there were many workers there. Dozens of people were rescued, but unfortunately many died from smoke inhalation.

Without elaborating on the type of employment or the place of origin of the workers, he said, “We are always cautious and caution against overcrowding of workers in accommodation.”
