The Labor Party has won the British general election by a huge margin. It will be the first time since 2010 that a Labor Party leader will address No. 10 Downing Street.

Indian-born Conservative leader Rishi Sunak lost the prime ministership. Many believe that the change in the party’s perception on the Kashmir issue has played a major role behind the rise of the Labor Party. And Starmer is the backbone of that change. This politician changed the position of the Labor Party on the Kashmir issue. He said that the Kashmir problem will be solved by both India and Pakistan. Earlier, Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn took a stand against Starmer.

The Labor Party had very good relations with India. But that relationship has been fraught since Jeremy Corbyn was at the helm of the Labor Party. Jeremy’s critical attitude towards India increased the distance with the Labor Party. The British government never wanted to turn its nose on the Kashmir issue. Jeremy’s position there puts the Labor Party in jeopardy.

In 2019 the Jeremy-led Labor Party passed a motion. It included the intervention of international observers in the Kashmir issue. Which was not taken well by the Government of India. New Delhi condemned the proposal and said in a statement that the Labor Party was discussing such a proposal “in the interest of vote bank”. Although the British government had made it clear at that time, the Kashmir issue was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Britain is not willing to interfere there.

The Labor Conference was held in September 2019. Controversial issues related to Kashmir were raised there. The resolution on Kashmir said that the Labor Party would work in the international arena to end the conflict in the government sector. This will be possible only when India and Pakistan stand together and speak for the workers of Kashmir. Even the Labor Party leadership raised the voice that human rights were being violated there.

Starmer won a landslide victory in the 2020 Labor Party leadership vote after Jeremy stepped down. After that, the leadership of the party came into his hands. As soon as Starmer took charge of the Labor Party, he began to change the party’s position on the Kashmir issue. Starmer increased contact with the Indian diaspora in Britain. His speech repeatedly came up with the need to build stronger ties with India on the basis of global security, climate protection and economic security.

While talking to Indians in the diaspora, Starmer has repeatedly acknowledged that Kashmir is a bilateral issue. India and Pakistan, both countries will solve this problem together. The Labor Party will not interfere in any way. According to diplomatic circles, India plays an important role on the international stage. Starmer understood that one of the goals would be to accelerate Britain’s relationship with India after the new government was formed there.
