Bus operations between Dhaka and four districts of Mymensingh remain suspended for a second consecutive day, as transport owners and workers protest the arrest of a driver and the continued suspension of several buses. The indefinite strike has left passengers stranded and frustrated, with many searching for alternative means of travel after previously purchasing tickets.
Since early Sunday morning (October 12), buses from Sherpur, Jamalpur, Netrokona, and Kishoreganj via Mymensingh have been off the road.
According to police reports, the dispute began when a freedom fighter named Abu Raihan accidentally bumped into a bus worker, Arun Jhontu, while boarding in Haluaghat. Despite multiple apologies, the worker allegedly behaved rudely and forced Raihan off the bus.
Following the incident, activists from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement began demonstrations near Mymensingh’s Maskanda bus terminal, leading to police detaining the transport worker involved.
Alamgir Mahmud Alam, president of the Mymensingh District Bus Owners’ Association, said the strike would continue until the detained worker is released and the ban on affected buses is lifted.
