Jamaat-e-Islami believes that the upcoming national parliamentary election does not provide equal opportunities, or a “level playing field,” for all political parties. The party’s Election Steering Committee has stated that under the current circumstances, it is not possible to organize an election that is free, fair, and widely acceptable.
The view was expressed during a meeting of the Election Steering Committee for the 13th National Parliament election, held on Friday evening at Jamaat-e-Islami’s central office, according to a party statement.
During the meeting, members discussed the country’s prevailing political situation and law-and-order conditions. They noted that justice has yet to be delivered for the killing of Shaheed Sharif and Osman bin Hadi. The committee also observed that there has been no visible progress in curbing terrorism, while incidents of killings continue to occur. At the same time, they said, there has been no significant success in recovering illegal firearms.
The committee further remarked that recent developments suggest the administration is showing bias toward one side, a trend they described as unacceptable and one that must be stopped immediately. They emphasized that ensuring a free and fair election requires effective action, including the arrest of identified militants and meaningful efforts to recover illegal weapons.
The meeting was inaugurated by the committee’s president, Maulana ATM Masum. To strengthen election-related activities, several sub-committees were formed, responsibilities were distributed among members, and a decision was taken to include additional members to further reinforce the committee. Member Secretary Maulana Abdul Halim and other committee members were also present at the meeting.
