Gold jewellery prices in the local market are currently very high, fluctuating almost every day. The price per bhori has reached around BDT 250,000, making gold jewellery increasingly unaffordable for middle-income families. As a result, the desire to buy or wear gold jewellery is gradually fading for many.
In this situation, some people choose to bring gold jewellery from abroad when returning home. Many expatriates also carry gold as gifts for relatives and family members.
Given the high price of gold, it is important to understand how much gold can legally be brought into the country from overseas.
Under existing regulations, passengers are allowed to bring a certain amount of gold jewellery without paying any duty or tax. Additionally, there is an option to bring gold bars by paying a fixed customs duty.
From the current fiscal year, the baggage rules have been updated to make it easier for non-resident passengers to bring gold jewellery and gold bars into the country.
How much gold you can bring
A returning passenger is allowed to bring up to 100 grams of gold jewellery once per year without paying any customs duty. This is roughly equivalent to 8 bhori and 10 ana of gold. However, the total number of jewellery items must not exceed 12 pieces.
Passengers may also bring gold by paying duty. According to the revised baggage rules, a passenger can bring one gold bar weighing up to 10 tola per year by paying a customs duty of BDT 5,000 per tola.
Procedure at the airport
All incoming passengers are required to complete a baggage declaration form upon arrival at the airport. This process begins immediately after landing.
The form requires details such as the passenger’s name, passport number, flight number, nationality, and country of departure. If the passenger is carrying any items subject to customs duty, full details must be declared in the form.
However, if a passenger is carrying less than 100 grams of gold jewellery and less than 200 grams of silver jewellery, there is no need to fill out the baggage declaration form. In such cases, the passenger can exit directly through the Green Channel.
Items that are exempt from duty under the baggage rules can be taken out of the airport without inspection by using the Green Channel.
