A petrol bomb attack was allegedly carried out at the home of a local political leader in Narail Sadar Upazila, setting fire to part of the house. Although belongings inside two rooms were burned, no casualties were reported. The incident occurred Monday night in Bil-Dumurtala village under Hobkhali Union.
The homeowner, Humayun Molla, is the president of the Hobkhali Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Local sources said Molla supports BNP “rebel” candidate Monirul Islam — a recently expelled district BNP general secretary — who contested the Narail-2 seat (covering part of Sadar and Lohagara). Meanwhile, his local rival, former union BNP president Riazul Islam, backed BNP candidate Fariduzzaman Farhad. Both candidates lost the election, and tensions between the rival groups have persisted since.
On Monday evening and again later at night, supporters from both sides reportedly clashed twice at Bagdanga Bus Stand in the union, leaving at least six people injured.
Family members alleged that around 1:00 am, shortly after the clashes, supporters of Riazul Islam threw a petrol bomb into a northern room of Humayun Molla’s house. Awakened by a loud explosion, family members discovered flames spreading through two rooms. Neighbors rushed to help control the fire before firefighters arrived.
Humayun’s sister, Rulika Begum, said local residents responded to her sister-in-law’s screams and helped bring the fire under control, adding that they suspect rival supporters were responsible.
Riazul Islam denied the allegations, claiming the incident was suspicious. He said a police vehicle had been stationed near the area shortly before the fire and suggested the blaze may have been part of a conspiracy.
Narail Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Oli Mia dismissed claims of a petrol bomb as rumor, saying authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and those responsible. Police also confirmed that a case has been filed over the earlier clashes, and efforts are underway to arrest the suspects.
