The High Court has dismissed four extortion cases filed against BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman. The state has filed a leave to appeal against the court’s ruling, which will be heard by the Appellate Division. The hearing is scheduled for Sunday, and it will be conducted by a bench led by Senior Justice Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam. The state argued that the High Court’s decision to cancel the cases was incorrect. On October 23, a two-judge bench of the High Court led by Justices A.K.M. Asaduzzaman and Syed Enayet Hossain had dismissed the four extortion cases against Tarique Rahman. The cases were filed during the army-backed caretaker government in 2007 in Kafrul police station, Dhaka. Tarique Rahman’s lawyers, Barristers Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaiser Kamal, expressed that he intends to resolve the cases through legal means. Tarique faces nearly 80 cases, which he plans to address legally. Kaiser Kamal, the BNP’s legal secretary, mentioned that Tarique Rahman is focused on resolving all political cases against party members before dealing with his own.
