Bangladesh Probes Suspected Freedom Fighter Certificates of 8,000 Govt Employees

Authorities in Bangladesh have identified around 8,000 government employees whose freedom fighter certificates appear questionable during an ongoing verification process. The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs is reviewing documents submitted by individuals who secured public jobs under the freedom fighter quota.

Officials say that discrepancies are being found in roughly 7–8 out of every 100 cases examined, including mismatched or incorrect information. The verification effort began after the interim government, formed in August 2024, pledged action against those using fraudulent certificates.

So far, data on more than 90,000 employees recruited under the quota has been reviewed. While the initial screening is complete, further monitoring is still ongoing, with thousands of cases yet to be finalized. Due to limited manpower, officials say the process may take a few more months.

The ministry does not have the authority to dismiss employees directly. Instead, it will send lists of suspected cases to relevant ministries, which can take disciplinary action if needed.

Experts warn that political pressure may hinder the publication of the final list. Past incidents have shown that fraudulent use of quota benefits has occurred, including cases where individuals falsified family ties to freedom fighters to gain advantages in education and employment.

The freedom fighter quota, introduced in 1972 and later expanded to include descendants, was abolished following mass protests in July. Analysts emphasize the need for transparency, urging the government to publish the findings and ensure accountability.
