A court has denied bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in the murder case of interior worker Selim Mondal. The order was issued on Monday afternoon by Judge Md. Abu Shamim Azad of the Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court following a hearing.

Ivy, a former senior vice president of the Bangladesh Awami League in Narayanganj district, is currently being held at Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail. On February 26, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Abdus Samad of Siddhirganj Police Station, applied to show her arrested in the Selim Mondal murder case. With this, she has now been shown arrested in a total of 11 cases.

Earlier, Ivy secured bail from the High Court in five cases last Thursday. She also obtained bail in five other cases, but those orders were later stayed following appeals by the state, and the matters are now pending before the Appellate Division.

The case stems from an incident on July 20, 2024, during an anti-discrimination student-led protest on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in the Shimrail area of Siddhirganj, where Selim Mondal was allegedly burned to death. His brother, Wazed Ali, filed the case, naming seven individuals and listing around 80 unidentified suspects.

Ivy’s lawyer, Awlad Hossain, claimed that her name was not mentioned in the original complaint and that she was shown arrested unlawfully 11 months later. He alleged that despite requests, the investigating officer failed to present supporting evidence in court within 24 hours. He further argued that adding her to the case after she secured bail in another matter amounts to harassment and questioned how one person could be implicated in two incidents at the same time. He said an appeal will be filed in the High Court.

Ivy was arrested from her residence early on May 9 following a dramatic operation. Later that morning, police produced her before the court in connection with another murder case involving a garment worker named Minarul. The court then ordered that she be sent to jail, after which she was transferred to Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail. Since then, she has been shown arrested in multiple cases.
