Mukesh Chandrakar, a freelance journalist from Chhattisgarh, India, was widely recognized for his fearless reporting. Known for exposing corruption among influential figures, his work drew both attention and controversy. Tragically, Mukesh was recently found murdered, sparking concerns about the safety of journalists in India, particularly in rural areas. His body was discovered in a septic tank in Bijapur district last Friday, and police have since arrested four suspects, including his cousin Ritesh Chandrakar.
Mukesh had recently exposed a corruption scandal involving a ₹120 crore road construction project, alleging significant misappropriation of funds. This led many to speculate that his revelations cost him his life. A relentless truth-seeker, Mukesh had previously faced multiple attacks for uncovering crimes and corruption in the Maoist-dominated Bastar region. Despite personal hardships and humble beginnings, he built a reputation for integrity, even launching a YouTube channel, Bastar Junction, with 150,000 subscribers to highlight unfiltered stories from the area.
On the night of the murder, Mukesh reportedly dined with his cousin Ritesh and others at the home of contractor Suresh Chandrakar, a key figure in the project he had exposed. Following a heated argument, Ritesh and an accomplice allegedly attacked Mukesh with iron rods, later hiding his body in the septic tank and sealing it with cement.
The Editors Guild of India has expressed deep concern over the incident, calling for better protection for journalists, especially those in small towns and rural areas. The Guild urged the government to ensure a thorough investigation into Mukesh’s murder and bring those responsible to justice.
