Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has emerged in northern China, spreading to neighboring countries, raising concerns due to its similarities with COVID-19 in terms of symptoms and transmission. Reports suggest the virus has now reached India, with cases confirmed in Bengaluru and Kolkata, bringing the total number of infections to seven. Authorities in states like Maharashtra and Karnataka have issued alerts, while hospitals in Delhi have been instructed to prepare for potential surges.
Health experts warn that children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to HMPV, which causes symptoms like fever, cough, and breathing difficulties that can escalate to pneumonia. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, they fear HMPV could pose a new crisis if not managed effectively. Malaysia has already advised citizens to wear masks, frequently wash hands, and avoid travel to high-risk countries, while Hong Kong has also reported infections.
In India, the virus was first detected in Bengaluru, with one three-month-old recovering and another eight-month-old child still under treatment. A case was recently confirmed in Kolkata as well. Authorities in Karnataka issued preventive guidelines, including wearing masks, using sanitizer, and maintaining hygiene. Maharashtra and Gujarat followed suit with similar advisories. Delhi’s former Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, has urged the central government to take swift action to prevent a “potential health crisis.”
Despite early warnings from China’s health department about the rising transmission rate, there has been no formal update on the current situation. Experts caution that HMPV may become more active in colder months, emphasizing the need for urgent preventative measures.
