BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that reform and elections are not contradictory and can proceed simultaneously. He emphasized the need to finalize the Reform Commission’s report through discussions with political parties. Elections, he said, offer an avenue to connect with the people and fulfill public aspirations. He made these remarks on Sunday morning while paying tribute at the mausoleum of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, marking his 89th birth anniversary.
Highlighting the need for an early announcement of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, Mirza Fakhrul noted that solving all issues within six months is unrealistic, making it essential to expedite the election declaration. He stressed that the country has seen no real attempt at parliamentary democracy over the past 16 years, urging a revival of such efforts.
He further mentioned that implementing the recommendations of the four Reform Commissions requires political consensus, as such steps cannot be effective without mutual agreement. Mirza Fakhrul also pointed out the necessity of cooperation from political parties, student organizations, and the government for the successful execution of the reforms. Thousands of BNP leaders and activists were present at Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum during the tribute ceremony.
