Sarjis Alam, a prominent coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement and chief organizer of the National Citizen Committee, has stepped down from his role as General Secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. He announced this decision through a Facebook post on Wednesday.

In his post, Sarjis stated, “I am no longer serving as the General Secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. To accelerate the foundation’s progress, changes have been made to its constitution, structure, and operational processes. From now on, the ‘Executive Committee’ will oversee all office activities, with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) acting as the head. Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdha is currently serving as the CEO.

The ‘Governing Body’ will focus on policymaking, consisting of the Chief Advisor and four advisors specializing in health, social welfare, local government, and ICT. The position of General Secretary has been discontinued.”

Sarjis mentioned that the foundation began providing financial assistance on October 1, with its office opening on October 15. He assumed the role of General Secretary on October 21 and served for about two months and ten days, officially concluding his responsibilities on January 7.

By December 31, verified financial assistance had been provided to 628 of 826 identified families of martyrs and around 2,000 of approximately 11,000 verified injured individuals.

He emphasized that he served the foundation to the best of his ability until he could no longer dedicate the required time. Stepping down when he felt he could no longer fulfill the role’s demands was, in his view, not a weakness but a display of integrity.
