At least four people have died due to heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in India, and several others are missing. According to the Uttarakhand state government, the incident occurred in the village of Mana, near the Tibet border, on Friday, when road construction workers were caught in a snowstorm. Approximately 50 workers were rescued, but four of them later died. At least five others remain missing, and rescue efforts are ongoing using helicopters.
Among the injured, 19 have been taken to a nearby army hospital, with most suffering injuries to their backs, heads, hands, and legs. Rescue teams are facing numerous challenges due to the heavy snow and freezing temperatures.
A video showed rescuers carrying injured individuals on stretchers through deep snow. The workers had been staying in a camp at the time of the snowfall, as confirmed by Gaurav Kunwar, a former village council member of Mana. The area is typically inhabited by nomads, and during the winter, road workers and some military personnel are stationed there. Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the Border Roads Organization’s rescue team is working to assist those affected.
Earlier, the Indian Meteorological Department had issued warnings about heavy rain and snow in the region, with orange alerts being issued for Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir due to snowfall.
