Former Mayor Atiqul Islam Among 10 Accused in Tribunal for July-August Massacre

On March 9th, 10 individuals, including former Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, Awami League Education Secretary Shahinur Mia, and Monowar Islam Chowdhury, President of Awami League’s Uttara West Thana, were presented before the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with the July-August massacre in Uttara.

 

The accused were brought from Kashimpur and Keraniganj jails around 10 AM. The other individuals facing charges include Abdullah Al Mamun Mondal, Organizational Secretary of Gazipur City Awami League, Bashir Uddin, President of Awami League’s Uttara Sector 6, Delwar Hossain Rubel, President of the Youth League of Ward 1 in North City, and police officers including OC Mashikur Rahman, Constable Hossain Ali, and AC Javed Iqbal.

 

Previously, the tribunal had ordered the arrest and detention of these individuals, including former mayor Atiqul Islam, in connection with the massacre. The investigation report for the case is scheduled to be submitted today. The accused are alleged to be involved in the killing of over 200 students and civilians in Uttara during the July-August period.
