Students who failed one or two subjects in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations will be given an opportunity to retake the failed subjects within a month, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced.

Under the proposed arrangement, candidates will only need to sit for examinations in the subjects they failed, rather than retaking all their papers.

A total of 422,905 candidates failed in one or two subjects this year.

The announcement was made on Saturday at a programme at the Secretariat, where the publication of this year’s HSC and equivalent examination results was formally inaugurated. Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon and Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin shared the information at the event.

Under the existing system, students who fail one or more subjects in major public examinations such as the SSC and HSC generally have to wait until the following year to retake them. They can usually choose to sit only for the failed subjects or retake all subjects.

The requirement to wait an entire year after failing just one or two subjects can delay students’ academic progress and place them under additional psychological pressure.

If implemented, the new initiative would reduce the waiting period and allow affected students to complete their examinations and progress academically sooner.

However, the relevant authorities are expected to issue detailed instructions on the examination schedule, application process and other procedures for arranging the additional examinations within a month.
