Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tazul Islam, has revealed that explosives had been planted with the intention of killing members of an investigative team, including himself, who were working on a case involving enforced disappearances. Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, April 6, following hearings in four cases at the tribunal, he emphasized that no conspiracy would be able to derail the course of justice.
Tazul Islam asserted that there is no evidence of corruption in the tribunal’s judicial process and that all such attempts to undermine its credibility would fail. In response to political parties’ demands for tribunals at the divisional level, he stated that while political groups have the right to express their views, it is ultimately the government’s responsibility to evaluate the feasibility of such proposals. He acknowledged the widespread nature of the crimes under investigation and suggested that increasing the number of tribunals could be justified, although distributing them nationwide would require careful consideration.
He further mentioned that a single tribunal is insufficient for the volume and scale of cases and expressed hope that a second tribunal would soon be established, noting that the government was already considering the matter positively.
