Bangladesh Renews Commitment to End Child Labour
Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating child labour as government officials, development partners, civil society representatives, and children came together to observe the World Day Against Child Labour 2026 at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) in Dhaka. The event emphasized the urgent need for collective action to ensure every child enjoys a safe childhood and access to quality education.
Held under the global theme, “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” the programme was jointly organized by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE), the Child Labour Elimination Platform (CLEP), and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The event was attended by Mr. Ariful Haque Choudhury, MP, Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, as the Chief Guest. In his speech, the Minister announced that the government would introduce more pilot projects to combat child labour. He stressed that a lack of public awareness remains one of the key drivers of child labour and highlighted the importance of engaging local leaders and religious figures to raise awareness at the grassroots level. He also reaffirmed the government’s willingness to work with all stakeholders to strengthen efforts against child labour.
Speaking at the programme, Mr. Max Tunon, Country Director of ILO Bangladesh, underscored the need for stronger coordination among government agencies, development partners, employers, workers, and civil society organizations to eliminate child labour effectively. Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul Hamid, Country Director of Educo Bangladesh, emphasized a sector-based approach and the collaborative initiatives being implemented through the Child Labour Elimination Platform (CLEP).
The programme highlighted Bangladesh’s progress in addressing child labour while acknowledging the challenges that remain. It also featured cultural performances by children promoting child rights, along with personal reflections from a child representative, reminding participants of the urgent need to protect every child’s future.
A panel discussion titled “Effective Steps and Shared Responsibilities to Eliminate Child Labour in Bangladesh” brought together representatives from the government, employers, workers, and the ILO to discuss practical solutions and shared responsibilities for ending child labour nationwide.
The event concluded with a renewed pledge from all stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and work together to ensure that every child in Bangladesh grows up in a safe environment, receives quality education, and has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
