South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol is facing a second impeachment proposal, with lawmakers beginning to vote on the matter on Saturday afternoon local time, according to Reuters.

Despite the renewed efforts, the impeachment proposal risks failure, as reports suggest that Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) remains steadfast in opposing the move. However, seven members of the PPP have publicly expressed their intention to support impeachment.

The opposition, which holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament with 192 seats, will need at least eight votes from the ruling party to secure the two-thirds majority required for the proposal to pass.

This comes after President Yoon faced severe backlash earlier this month when a declaration of martial law on December 3 was swiftly revoked within six hours due to widespread protests and parliamentary opposition. Lawmakers from the opposition, despite police and military resistance, entered parliament to challenge the decision, forcing the president to withdraw the order.

Nationwide calls for Yoon’s resignation have since intensified. A week ago, the PPP boycotted the first impeachment vote, saving Yoon from immediate dismissal. However, opposition efforts have been reignited, with PPP leader Han Dong-hoon urging ruling party members to consider supporting the motion.

PPP legislator Ahn Cheol-soo stated on social media that he would vote in favor of impeachment, citing the need for stability in South Korea’s economy, diplomacy, and public well-being. Meanwhile, the main opposition Democratic Party has labeled Yoon’s governance “unbearable madness,” calling on the ruling party to join in the impeachment process, warning that rejecting it would betray public trust.
