Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized that police officers face numerous challenges while performing their duties, and the most essential quality to overcome them is patience. Speaking at a meeting with police officials on the occasion of “Police Week 2025” held Tuesday (April 29) at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh, Dhaka, he urged officers to resolve issues through dialogue and avoid unnecessary use of force or baton charges.

He stressed that police must win public trust through courteous behavior, service mindset, and sincerity. People must not suffer from harassment, and the police must operate neutrally, free from political influence, bribes, and corruption. The adviser, who recently visited various police units, highlighted major concerns such as inadequate accommodation and meals for junior officers. Steps have already been taken to address transportation issues, including the procurement of 200 pickup vans for police stations, pending cabinet committee approval.

He added that the government is working on welfare measures, including lifting the ceiling on risk allowances for constables and SIs, and introducing loans for purchasing motorcycles for SIs and ASIs, possibly with government-subsidized interest. Assigning spouses within the same district and considering local postings for lower ranks are also being prioritized. He acknowledged a shortage in police manpower and instructed the IGP to expand the organization’s TO&E structure. Emphasizing the evolving nature of crime and terrorism, he underlined the need for extensive training and ordered the deployment of skilled officers at training institutes.

Discussions also covered enhancing traffic duties with better infrastructure, night patrol tents, and strong operations against drug lords.
