Legendary tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away in a hospital in San Francisco, USA, following complications related to heart disease and respiratory issues. He was 73. Zakir Hussain’s family confirmed his death to the Indian news agency PTI. The musician had been battling severe health problems for some time, which had led to the cancellation of several upcoming concerts. He had been in the ICU for two weeks and his condition was reported as critical.
Zakir Hussain, son of the renowned tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha, had been a global icon in classical Indian music, winning numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards. He was known for his unparalleled skill in tabla playing, and his legacy spans decades of musical excellence. Born on March 9, 1951, in Mumbai, Zakir began learning tabla at the age of 3 and started performing at the age of 12. His contributions to the world of music were widely recognized, earning him prestigious awards such as the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
In honoring his legacy, Indian Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted, “The beats of Zakir Hussain’s tabla transcend languages, borders, cultures, and generations. His rhythmic vibrations will echo in our hearts forever.” The music world mourns the loss of a true legend.
