The July Martyrs’ Family Society held a protest and human chain in front of the main office of the July Smriti Foundation in Dhaka on Monday, May 12, demanding the resignation of its recently appointed Chief Executive Officer, retired Lieutenant Colonel Kamal Akbar, and Treasurer Wakaar Ahmed. Protesters claimed that the newly appointed CEO has no familial ties to the martyrs or injured individuals from the July Movement, making his appointment unacceptable to them. They also expressed outrage over remarks allegedly made at a recent meeting at the state guesthouse Jamuna, where the foundation’s treasurer reportedly referred to the father of martyr Yamin and several injured survivors as “mad.” The demonstrators further criticized the foundation’s leadership for failing to hold any of the eight scheduled meetings with general members over the past eight months and condemned the recent decisions made without consultation. They warned of more intense action if the resignations are not tendered promptly.
